Tafelberg Road roadworks contractor will be on builders break for festive holiday period

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has made good progress with the rehabilitation of Tafelberg Road over the past nine months and would like to thank all the visitors and residents of the surrounding area for their patience while this important work is under way. The project team will stop the works on Friday, 13 December 2024 and resume on site on Wednesday, 8 January 2025. This builders break will ease traffic congestion in the area, especially over the busy holiday period. The project team will ensure that the bitumen treated base layer of the road is in place and that Tafelberg Road is safe and ready for use over the holidays.

‘Holiday makers flocking to Table Mountain as well as residents do not have to worry about the roadworks along Tafelberg Road, adding additional congestion to the area over the festive period as the team will stop works on Friday, 13 December 2024 and will resume operation on 8 January 2025. We want to thank the public for your patience, the team has covered an immense amount of work thus far and if all goes according to plan, this major rehabilitation project should be complete by February 2025,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

To date, most of the stormwater infrastructure along this road has been replaced, improved, and rehabilitated. This is critical work as the stormwater infrastructure diverts runoff from rainfall events away from Tafelberg Road to prevent the flooding of infrastructure during normal downpours.

When the project team resumes work in January 2025, they will start with the block retaining structure at the lower parking area; asphalt surfacing; road marking; road signage and the remainder of the sidewalks and paving at the designated parking lots.

Tafelberg Road is the main access route to the Table Mountain National Park and the Table Mountain aerial cableway, and carries a lot of traffic all-year round. The rehabilitation project will prolong the lifespan of the road, and improve general safety for all users, be it for those visiting the cable car or hiking trails, or for pedestrians enjoying the view.

The rehabilitation work is taking place from the intersection of Tafelberg Road with Kloof Nek Road to the Lower Cableway Station located in the Table Mountain National Park. This section is about 1,3 km long, with work taking place Monday to Friday, from 07:00 to 18:00.

The City continues to partner with SANParks on various aspects of this project.
